The income concentration coefficient (Gini coefficient) measures the extent to which the actual distribution of the population’s income deviates from a perfectly equal distribution.

A statistical measure used to assess the degree of inequality in the distribution of income or wealth within a society. It ranges from 0 to 1, where 0 represents perfect equality, meaning that everyone has the same income, and 1 represents maximum inequality, meaning that all income is concentrated in the hands of one person.Income distribution

The manner in which the total income of a society is distributed among its members or population groups.

Inequality

The degree of difference in income or well-being among different individuals or population groups.

Lorenz curve

A graph showing the cumulative distribution of income or wealth across shares of the population ranked by income level.

Gini index

A numerical measure of inequality based on the area between the Lorenz curve and the line of perfect equality.

The indicator is a measure of relative poverty and inequality in income distribution within a country. This indicator and similar relative measures are commonly used to measure poverty in high-income countries and are increasingly used as supplementary measures of inequality and poverty in low- and middle-income countries.

The Gini coefficient can be defined as a macroeconomic indicator that characterizes the differentiation of the population’s monetary income by measuring the extent to which the actual income distribution deviates from a perfectly equal distribution among the country’s residents.

The Gini coefficient is equal to the ratio of the sum of the total number of individuals and one to the difference between the total number of individuals and one, minus twice the sum of the products of each individual’s rank and weight, divided by the product of the mean welfare measure, the total number of individuals and the difference between the total number of individuals and one.

Formula:

G = (N + 1) / (N − 1) − 2 × Σ(rᵢ × wᵢ) / [μ × N × (N − 1)]

where:

G is the Gini coefficient;

N is the total number of individuals;

rᵢ is the rank of each individual, from the richest (1) to the poorest (N);

wᵢ is the weight of each individual;

μ is the mean welfare measure; and

Σ denotes summation across all individuals.

The quality of the indicator is ensured through the use of a representative sample in the Integrated Sample Survey of Household Budgets and Labour Force, compliance with the established time frames and survey conditions, and multistage quality control, including checks of questionnaires for completeness and logical consistency.
