Tolerance or acceptance of violence

A social or personal attitude according to which the use of violence is considered acceptable in certain circumstances. In this case, it refers to women who believe that a husband is justified in hitting or beating his wife for one or more of the specified reasons.
Rationale and interpretation

The 2023 Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey assessed the attitudes of women aged 15–49 towards wife or partner beating by asking respondents whether they considered a husband or partner justified in hitting or beating his wife or partner in various circumstances.

The purpose of these questions is to measure the extent to which violence is socially accepted in settings where women have a lower social status and where violence may be perceived as a disciplinary measure when a woman does not conform to certain expected gender roles.
Method of computation

The indicator is calculated as the percentage of women aged 15–49 who believe that a husband is justified in hitting or beating his wife for at least one of the following reasons:

She goes out without telling him; She neglects the children; She argues with him; She refuses sexual relations; or She burns the food.
