Only women who provide a “yes” answer to all three components are considered women who “make their own decisions in sexual and reproductive relationships.”

Rationale and interpretation

The autonomy of women and girls in decision-making on consensual sexual relations, contraceptive use, and access to sexual and reproductive health services is key to their empowerment and full enjoyment of their reproductive rights. Women who make their own decisions about their health are considered authorized to exercise their reproductive rights.
Method of computation

Numerator: the number of married or unionized women aged 15-49:- who can say no to sex; and

  • for whom the decision about contraception is mostly not made by the husband/partner; and
  • for whom the decision about health care for themselves is usually not made by the husband/partner or someone else. The numerator includes only women who meet all three criteria of authority. Denominator: the total number of women aged 15-49 who are married or in a union. Proportion = Numerator X 100 / Denominator
